Session #2: Overcoming Adversity and Fostering the Mental Health of Latino/Hispanic Youth and their Families through Integrated Care

Integrated care involves an interprofessional team coming together with families to address mental health, health behaviors, and life stressors. Integrated care can be particularly effective for working with Latino/Hispanic youth and their families in that views of healthcare within this community tend to be more holistic and emphasize how the body and mind are interconnected. For healthcare providers to better reach Latino/Hispanic youth and their families, including agricultural workers, trust and the understanding of culture are essential in building patient relationships and providing appropriate care. In this webinar, presenters will describe what integrated care is and the impact of adversity on Latino/Hispanic patient health. Presenters will also address the importance of cultural competence and trauma-informed care in providing healthcare, especially mental health services, for this population. Patient education resources, outreach strategies, and cultural considerations related to mental health with Latino/Hispanic youth and their families will be shared, including firsthand experiences from a Community Health Representative/Worker.

Participants will:
• Define integrated care and understand the impact of adversity on Latino/Hispanic patient health.
• Address the importance of cultural competence and trauma-informed care with the Latino/Hispanic population, especially when providing healthcare and mental health support.
• Gain resources and strategies related to mental health support for Latino/Hispanic youth and their families.
